COST MP1105 SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE
Fire Retardancy and Protection of Materials conference (FRPM15)

  • 22nd to 25th June 2015
  • Berlin, Germany

The Conference will be particularly focused at materials in building constructions, transportation, electrical and electronic engineering. Effective fire retardancy for polymers will be our main focus. Key properties of materials include ignitability, flame spread, heat release rate, fire load and resistance to fire. Hence, a main challenge is to provide effective fire retardancy for polymers by striking a balance between their functionality and their risk as a fire hazard. Commercial and regulatory pressure is a strong driving force on multi-disciplinary research and development in this field. We will assess the state of the art and discuss new developments coming up. The special aim of this conference is to bring together basic and applied science and enhance the exchange between scientists from industry and academia.
The emphasis will be placed on

  • Fundamental aspects in fire behaviour and fire retardancy
  • New flame retardants, novel flame retardant polymers
  • Fire retardancy of fibres, textiles, foams and thin foils/films
  • Protective coatings, fire protection
  • Flame retardancy of composites, composites in fire
  • Industrial application, novel methods
  • Environmental aspects, smoke, toxicity

The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday 15th January 2015

The objective of the meeting is to strengthen networking of the people involved in the COST Action MP1105 and the FP7 Co-ordination action 2BFUNTEX (www.2BFUNTEX.eu) as well as with textile industry (especially the Finnish textile industry representatives). Within 2BFUNTEX 8 Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) have been started up in 2013, among which the MDT on Flame Retardancy. This WG1 meeting will be combined with a 2BFUNTEX workshop and MDT meeting.

The aims are:

  • To allow the coordination of research on a European level, avoiding duplication of efforts and linking industry and research.
  • To facilitate the formation of consortia to develop new research projects for funding from national and EU funding bodies.
  • To establish a functional network where each participant is aware of the activities and expertise of other members working in the area of flame retardancy.

The focus will be on the current HORIZON 2020 project preparations : to share ideas and the status of project preparations for 2015 calls.

Further, you are also invited to participate in the 2BFUNTEX Seminar for the Finnish textile industry on Tuesday morning 27th January 2015 and there will be plenty opportunities to network with Finnish industrial participants.

A limited number of participants will be able to receive travel reimbursement (according to the COST MP1105 budget 5 participants can be reimbursed).  Members who wish to participate and receive reimbursement are asked to register as soon as possible. Travel reimbursement will be granted on a “first come, first serve” basis.

COST MP1105 SCIENTIFIC WORKSHOP
Advances in the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for flame retardant applications

  • March 26-27  2015
  • Bucharest, Romania

The workshop will bring together specialists from academia, research institutes and industry for discussing some of the recent advances and trends in the synthesis of different types of nanomaterials and their characterization for application in flame retardant textiles, plastics and composites with improved properties.
The workshop topic is related to novel flame retardants. Nanomaterials are today one of the key enabling technologies with high impact in both modern and traditional industries. New classes of nanopowders with potential utilization as flame retardants and the methods used for their synthesis will be presented and discussed.
The valorisation of these new nanomaterials in flame retardant materials requires the development of new technologies at a technology readiness level 5 for processing as coatings, impregnation as well as other specific methods. Modelling and simulation of the processes is an important task towards process optimization, opening new applications. New business strategies and business models for nano-enabled products for flame retardants will also be a key point to discuss for future possible commercialization.
In order to make such novel nanomaterials for flame retardants to be socially acceptable and widely used, it is very important to establish and promote reliable standardized approaches for their safe and sustainable management. Standardization and technical solutions to health and safety that can potentially provide legal certainty and consumer confidence in nanotechnology and nanomaterials for the entire product life cycle will be discussed.

Participation is free of charge for speakers and COST MP1105 members
If you are interested to give an oral or poster presentation at the COST MP1105 workshop, please send your paper title, short abstract  (max. 1 page A4) and preference for oral or poster presentation before December 15, 2014 by e-mail (

COST MP1105 TRAINING SCHOOL
Fire testing according to European/International Standards

  • 20-22 or 22-24 October 2014
  • Bolton, UK

The purpose of this training school is to educate early stage researchers or established personnel working in industry about various test methods and instruments used for evaluation of fire performance of materials. The course is aimed at explaining the important factors to consider when testing different materials in order to achieve a good result and how the physical and chemical characteristics of different products can be addressed to improve fire performance. It will also address how improving one type of performance, for example flammability, can have a detrimental effect on another, such as smoke production. Invited members from industry will also explain how they use small scale testing for product development which correlates to the larger scale regulatory based tests thus producing large cost savings in terms of testing costs. The training school will consist of a two day workshop in the fire testing laboratories of the University of Bolton and Exova with a third day of lectures in Bolton and will be run over two separate sessions of three days: Monday to Wednesday and Wednesday to Friday.
Experts will provide an overview of product behaviour, testing protocol and interpretation of results on the following test methods:

  • Flammability of textiles, BS 5438
  • Limiting oxygen index and UL-94 (plastics and polymers)
  • Thermogravimetric analysis
  • The Cone calorimeter (construction products, marine and rail)
  • Single burning item (construction products)
  • Flame spread and non-combustibility (rail, marine and construction products)
  • Smoke and toxicity (transport products)

Numbers are limited and early booking is advisable.  Please register by 15 September 2014
